What to Expect on Your First Day at Essex

Arrivals Day is Sunday 1st October. We can't wait to meet you!

For your first week, you'll be going to lots of introductions to your course and life at Essex. Normal lectures and classes don't kick in until week 2, starting on the 9th so you've got a bit of time to get settled in.

If you're staying in University accommodation, the first thing you'll need to do is pick up your key card. Depending on where you're staying, you'll need to go to different places.

First you need to print off your boarding pass as you will need this to collect your key. When you arrive, take your boarding pass to one of our key collection offices:

University Quays

Once you’ve sorted out where to collect your key from, it’s time to get settled in. So say goodbye to your family and loved ones (you’ll see them soon, don’t worry), make a cup of tea and start moving in to your new home. There'll be a few SU Angels around the car park to help you move in, just grab their attention and they'll do whatever they can to help.

Remember everyone is in the same boat and much like snakes, they're as afraid of you as you are of them. So don’t be afraid to get stuck right in and chat to your new flatmates. Suggested conversation starters include whether you add milk first or last when making tea, what they're watching on Netflix and why pineapple on pizza is a travesty.

Once you’ve put those final fairy lights up next to your world map poster you're ready to head out and change the world (or head to SU Bar, it's up to you).
