VP Welfare March Blog

Hey guys, Spring is Here! Does anyone else instantly start to feel a bit better when the sun is shining or is it just me! It was a bit of a strange on this year as for the first time in Three years I’ve not been involved in the elections either campaigning myself or on a campaign team. A big well done to everyone who had the courage to out themselves out there and campaign it takes a lot of courage and from experience campaign week can be so exhausting.

As always, I want to keep you all updated on what I’ve been working on, so here’s the latest. But as ever feel free to get in touch if you have any questions!

Democracy In Action

I have been supporting the two Violence against women and girls (VAWG) democracy in Action teams with their projects both tackling very important topics from report and support to sexual health. I am looking forward to seeing their presentations and I am incredibly proud of both groups and what they have achieved so far. I feel a bit like a proud mum 🥺.

University Mental Health Day

I had the opportunity to host the screening and panel Q&A for Contact Hours a powerful short film directed by Harry Richard’s and written by Rufus Love. The film follows a simple yet deeply important story, beautifully put together and handled with sensitivity, especially in its exploration of student mental health and suicide.

On University Mental Health Day, this screening was a timely reminder of the importance of open conversations around mental health. During the Q&A, Harry and Rufus shared their inspiration behind the film, the creative process, and the role of storytelling in breaking down stigma. It was great to see students engage with the discussion, highlighting just how vital these conversations are.

A huge thank you to everyone who attended and contributed to such an insightful discussion. Let’s continue to create spaces where people feel seen, heard, and supported. Let’s keep finding ways to support each other, to check in, and to make sure those important conversations don’t slip away. đź’ś

If you haven’t already, I highly recommend watching Contact Hours its a film that challenges, resonates, and stays with you long after the credits roll.

One World Essex Flag Parade:

One of my favourite events of the year! I’m pretty sure a lot of you know how I love being the flag bearer for Nigeria every year. I love seeing the diversity of our campus and everyone proudly sharing country pride. A massive well done to Guilly, the ISA and the Engagement team for making this happen and thanks Guilly for letting me lead the flag parade such a highlight for me!
