We've put together some information on what happens between now and you're first day at Essex.
You’ve made it... congratulations! Very soon you’ll be roaming around campus on your way to class as a University of Essex student. That time will come around quickly, so we’ve put together some information on what happens between now and then.
Registration will open on Wednesday 7th September for students starting their courses in October 2022. Registration is done online, click here to read more. Once you have registered and have arrived on campus, you will then have to book an appointment for your in-person Right to Study check. PS. Don’t worry, you’ll get spammed with emails about all of this kind of stuff, we’re just giving you the heads up.
Whatever course you’ve chosen to do, you’ll likely have a mixture of compulsory and optional modules to choose from. Search for the name of your course with ‘University of Essex’ and ‘Course Structure’ and you’ll find a breakdown of the modules you’ll be doing or are able to do in your first year.
PLAN WHERE TO LIVE
If you’re relocating for uni, you’re going to need somewhere to live. All full-time undergraduate students studying at our Colchester Campus are entitled to accommodation for the first year of study provided you return your application by midnight, Friday 26 August 2022.
If you want to live off campus, you can rent somewhere in the local area through SU Homes. SU Homes is run by the Students’ Union (SU) to make sure our student’s find the best home, liaise with the landlord and help with the tricky stuff.
DO I NEED EVERY BOOK ON MY READING LIST?
You might get information emailed to you about reading lists and things to do before you start your course. You do not need to buy every book listed. All books on reading lists will be available in the University library to read and borrow for free. If there’s only a few copies available, think ahead and borrow before everyone else does. But don’t worry, most of the time the library has copies on the shelves that you can read in the library, but can’t be removed.
GET STARTED ON THOSE ASSIGNMENTS
If you’re given work to do before you start your course, don’t procrastinate it - get it done! You signed up for this, so get started straight away. Things might seem tricky at first, but that’s totally normal. Your first year is for you to get a taste for your course, settle in and build the foundations for the rest of your degree. Don't feel too much pressure, but aspire to do the best you can.
IT’S TIME TO GET EXCITED
Get ready to be welcomed with open arms! We can’t wait to celebrate you joining our Essex family. You’ll automatically become a member of the SU and we’ve been planning lots of welcome events for you. Follow us on social media to stay updated!
