It’s official – Essex is the University (and SU!) of the year 2018!!!!
At the Times Higher Education Awards, widely referred to as 'the Oscars of Higher Education', Essex has won the most prestigious prize of them all: University of the Year 2018.
The award, which was presented by Great British Bake Off presenter and all-round feminist legend Sandi Toksvig, was collected on stage by the University Vice Chancellor, Anthony Forster and Students’ Union President, Tanki Chartier.
Tanki had this to say in response to the win...
“This award recognises the incredible qualities and achievements of Essex students, past and present, and the unique partnership between the Students’ Union and the University to put students at the heart of everything that happens at Essex.
"This university has the most brilliant, daring and bold students – students that are prepared to challenge the status quo and fight for what’s right - and we are all feeling justifiably proud today”
The successful award application refelected the University's work with the SU as well as celebrating its pioneering work on closing the gender pay gap and how it has stayed true to its radical history.
University Vice-Chancellor Professor Anthony Forster said: "This award recognises the impact of our amazing staff and students, the quality of our relationship with our Students’ Union and the strength of our national, regional and global partnerships.
“Founded as a progressive university, at Essex we are prepared to stand out from the crowd - and challenging convention is in our DNA. We are a community of talented, committed people, a university that is putting our staff and students first, and home to those who want to make the world a better place.
“I am delighted the award of University of the Year recognises these values and the achievements of our community of members.”
This award completes a great year for Essex SU and our 16,000 members, following hot on the heels of being ranked in the top 20 of SU's in the UK in the Times Higher Education Student Experience Survey and being ranked in the top 10 SU's in the country for the quality of our academic representation in the National Student Survey (NSS).
In summary: GO TEAM ESSEX!
