Hello and a warm welcome to the LGBTQ+ community here at the University of Essex! My name is Phoenix (she/they pronouns), but feel free to just call me Fee, and I’m your LGBQ+ Officer for the year.

My role is to represent LGBQ+ students at student parliament, campaign on the issues you care about to bring about positive change on campus, and plan events to bring people in the community together through education, discussion, friendship and fun. It is essentially my job to ensure all LGBQ+ students are supported to have the best possible university experience! I am one of a number of community representatives at our Colchester campus: there is also a Trans Officer, LGBT+ Network as well as the LGBTQ+ Society – we are all here to support you during your time at Essex.

About me

A few things about me: I’m 22, a Pisces, on my second year studying Philosophy, Politics and Economics, my favourite song from Folklore is Peace, and my career aspirations are to go into either International Development, Human Rights Law or teaching after graduation. I’m always available to talk to, any questions you have, worries about settling into to uni, if you just need a friendly face on campus – I’m your person.

Don't worry, be happy...

Right before arriving at Essex, I felt pretty nervous about making friends and adjusting to university study, but I ended up meeting some of my best friends and getting involved with the Students’ Union – everyone at the university is super friendly and there is always something to do on campus.

My advice for new students would be to go to events, give yourself the opportunity to meet new people and you will make friends and settle in really quickly. Our community specific run events are great to get to know other LGBTQ+ students, we offer a range of activities from movie screenings to drag performances to guest speakers and plenty more, so there is truly something for everyone.

I know everything feels a bit hectic and uncertain right now due COVID-19, but we won’t be letting that stop us from having a great time. We have so much planned for our students this year already. Be sure to check-out our social media accounts to stay up to date with everything LGBTQ+ at Essex, we can’t wait to welcome you in October!

All the best, Phoenix.
