Essex is a very diverse, multi-cultural campus (home to over 16,000 students from over 130 countries… it really is the world in one place!). This means there are many different cultures, religions and faiths present all in one place.
Many students coming to Essex for the first time have told us that they were worried that there would be nowhere for them to practice their faith and meet like-minded people. Well, don’t worry, we have your back! Here’s a comprehensive list of all of the different facilities and events available for different faiths, on-campus and in the local area.
Both Colchester and Southend campus have a multi-faith chaplaincy (MFC).
The Chaplaincy offers two spaces for worship, prayer and quiet reflection: a social space with kitchen area for reading, socialising and discussion, and a quiet space for private prayer, meditation or reflection.
In MFC Space 1 a variety of regular services, meetings and events are organised by chaplains and faith representatives. If you would like to know more about these representatives you can find out more here.
MFC Space 2 is available for each of the five Islamic daily prayers. In addition, the Chaplaincy facilitates the Islamic Society in the larger gathering of Friday (Jummah) prayers each week, by arranging a larger venue elsewhere on Colchester Campus.
The Multi-Faith Chaplaincy is located on Level 3 of campus and is fully accessible.

The Chaplaincy and adjoining prayer room at Southend Campus offers a space for prayer and quiet reflection.
The Multi-Faith Chaplaincy is on the 2nd floor of the Gateway building, close to the Elmer Suite and Student Common Room.

In addition to the MFC, the Students’ Union has a number of different faith societies. Societies are a great way to meet likeminded people and share your faith. Below you will find all the current religious societies we have on campus.
