We have 42 different sports clubs - yes, FORTY TWO! Essex Blades is the collective name for all of our Students' Union (SU) Sports Clubs at the University of Essex. Even if you aren’t involved in sports yet, we still encourage you to #BackTheBlades - and then join a club ;)

  1. It’s an opportunity to try a sport you’ve never done before, with clubs like lacrosse, kendo, pole and climbing which aren’t available in most areas.

  2. The people you meet will have your back and give you even more friendly faces around campus.

  3. It will help you stay fit and healthy, and also help you mental health by relieving stress and focusing the mind.

  4. The socials and nights out will fill up your week with music, laughs and memories.

  5. The team spirit will keep you motivated and connected so you aspire for better in the sport and your studies.

  6. It will give you incredible opportunities to be involved with sport, play against other clubs, learn skills related to sport and the wider uni life.

  7. You will be given coaching which will help you gain knowledge about the sport in a short space of time and be mentored into a role that suits you.

  8. Our clubs can compete (and win) in fixtures and big sporting events like the British Universities and Colleges Sport Championship and Derby Day.  The atmosphere, the travelling, the spirit is unmissable.

  9. You can come along to ‘have a go’ sessions, try the sport and decide whether you like it or not, with no commitment.

  10. We all need a distraction from the work we have to do, why not make it a healthy one by letting off a few arrows at archery or taking it out on the ball at baseball.
