Aims:

  • To promote discussion and understanding of topics such as: humanism, the importance of secularism, and enlightenment values of reedom of speech, etc. in politics;
  • To discuss religion and host debates over God's existence and the validity of religious claims;
  • To present discussions over ethical issues through a secular lens and promote open-dialogues concerning them;
  • To promote understanding of science and scientific literacy where necessary, especially for the critical analysis of political and philosophical issues;
  • To build a community of bright individuals capable of coming together and developing nuanced views on a variety of complex issues.

Objectives: 

  • To arrange socials that help facilitate the building of such a community;
  • To host speakers on topics relevant to society’s aims;
  • To liaise with political and religious societies on campus on the fulfilment of the society’s aims;
  • To organize an open forum for members to discuss and debate relevant topics, especially with members of partner societies;
  • To, in collaboration with the philosophy department, provide a peer-to-peer academic support system run by and for students studying philosophy;
  • To offer a humanist pastoral care service available at the Multi-Faith Chaplaincy for members of the student body in need of someone to listen without trying to push an agenda;
  • To fundraise for charity and engage in effective altruism.
