Looking to get fit? You're in the right place. The Calisthenics Society is home to one of the best fitness communities at The University of Essex. Here you will learn the basic fundamentals of bodyweight training and begin a fun, fit and healthy lifestyle.
What is calisthenics?
Calisthenics, or Kallos-sthenos, is derived from the ancient Greek language and literally means beautiful strength.
Calisthenics is a type of training where one utilises only compound bodyweight exercises to perform strength and power feats. It has been used for centuries by people to achieve high levels of fitness using just their bodyweight. As its name suggests, calisthenics teaches the body how to co-ordinate its strength and balance through the core which allows for movements such as handstands, push-ups, and squats. One of the greatest benefits of calisthenics is the fact it can be done anywhere and utilise external sources to help with progressions to movement patterns (using the external environment such as a tree for aid when learning to handstand for example).
What to expect
Our aim is to inspire as many people as possible to become fit and healthy and help them become the strongest version of themselves physically, mentally and spiritually through the art of calisthenics, thus increasing the awareness of and participation in the calisthenics movement.
This Society is designed to promote fitness in a creative, fun and friendly way. Calisthenics is a very free movement and since it can be performed with or without equipment, it makes the opportunities for creativity almost endless, so expect exhilarating exercise classes, it will be an amazing experience.
We are open to everyone of all cultures, ages and skill/ability, whether you just want to get into a fit lifestyle, or you're looking to take your fitness level to the next level, we will ensure you meet your fitness needs and wants.
