Essex Blades WOMEN's Basketball

"Our goal is not to win. It's to play together and play hard. Then, winning takes care of itself."

Interested in playing basketball?

Whether you have played before or are a beginner, get involved at our come and try sessions! Basketball is a brilliant way to meet new people, since we do a lot of joint socials with not only the Men's Basketball team but also other clubs such as American Football or Athletics, its also a great way to stay fit! We have two teams and always ensure that everyone who commits gets game time.

If you have any questions don't hesitate to contact someone on the Exec.

Women's Basketball is changing at Essex. There are two teams; a First team and a Second team. The First team is the Performance team for players who play basketball at a higher level and are experienced players, they will be coached by Mark Lloyd. The Second team is for those who have less experience but are willing to compete in and be successful in BUCS competitions. Places are limited for the Performance team however trials will be held for returning and new students to prove themselves. Dates for the tryouts are shown below.

First Team: This is the High Performance team of the University which competes in the BUCS league and National League. Most of the postitions on the team have already been filled for the 2015-2016 academic year, however the Coach could still recruit more players from tryouts.

Second Team: The team participates in the BUCS League and have a separate training session from the first team. We train once a week on Thursdays, however we are trying to add another session. 20 players will be chosen to join the team. As our main aim is to develop basketball skills and playing as a club, we are looking for committed players who wish to represent the University, but more importantly to commit to the team. Preferences for who gets given more game (playing) time will always be given to the players who commit.

Just Play Sessions: The girls who haven't been allocated to either team will be able to join "Just Play" sessions. Just Play is dedicated to those who are willing to develop their skills to advance to the Second team, and is also ideal for those who don't have the time or don't wish to commit to the sport and are wish to take part socially.

Once the structure of the teams is decided there is always the chance that people can be moved down or up this structure; women's basketball is very flexible, therefore there will be more tryouts after Christmas to ensure that the players at all levels are appropriately committed and skilled.
