Equestrian & Polo

Hello and welcome to the University's Equestrian and Polo Club!

The Club

Horse riding is a fantastic experience and a really good way to keep fit, relax and have fun.

Everyone is welcome to join us, we cater for all abilities and riding levels. The club is hosted at Brook Farm Stables in Alresford. To get there you can catch either get the 74 bus towards Wivenhoe at 50 minutes past every hour, or you can catch the 78X towards Wivenhoe at 20 minutes past every hour. The bus usually takes around 15 minutes - these bus times are based from South Courts. Please ensure that you always arrive to Brook Farm early. If you have any questions about riding with the club, please feel free to email sr21631@essex.ac.uk (our president) or contact the Instagram for further information!
We usually host three 1hr sessions on Wednesday afternoons at the following times, with occasional extra sessions depending on sign up and demand:
Beginner - 12.30pm
Novice - 2.00pm
Intermediate/Advanced - 3.00pm
The club also hosts friendly competitions and gymkhanas, where members can race against each other to earn prizes such as rosettes and money off lessons and hopefully will soon be able to offer hacks for the weekend.

Whether you've played polo before or have never sat on a horse, we cater to all abilities. By joining the club we offer the most affordable way of getting into polo with beginner lessons at £50. We aim to hold polo lessons every Saturday (Numbers dependant) at Silverleys polo club in Hertfordshire, transport is provided by the club for a £7 minibus fee (this is normally included in your ticket price unless stated otherwise). We offer the chance to compete for us at the largest national polo tournament held between universities called SUPA, we have two of these competitions a year. Winter SUPA (Held in February) is based at Onley Equestrian Centre in Rugby as is Arena polo whereas Summer SUPA (held in June) is based in Lemington Spa and we compete on grass! Whether you wish to play or whether you wish to join as the many social members who come along, SUPA is an experience like no other!

Pre-BUCs Team

This year we are lucky to be able to offer the chance for our more advanced riders who are looking to compete or to further themselves with lessons at Hemps Green Equestrian

We take part in Derby Day!
Derby Day is the annual sporting challenge competition between the University of Essex and the University of East Anglia. They go head to head in all sports and an overall winner is decided on who has the most points. Despite the equestrian team not being able to compete this year, it's always a great day and a good way to support the university and all the essex blades teams.

If you would like to find out more and join the club then drop by our stall at Freshers Fair in October :)

Regular meeting times, socials, events

The club ride every Wednesday from 12.30 - 4pm at Brook Farm.
We are trying to host socials every week, and everyone who wants to come along are more than welcome! All information about our socials, themes and whether or not we are going to Sports Fed, will be posted on our instagram page

Club aims

We aim to promote horse riding to everyone! We are a mixed club and team sport so no-one should feel like they can’t join in. Brook Farm have access to hacking and teach both show jumping and dressage. We would like to promote for more members and aim to have form links with other riding schools around Essex. It also gives you a chance to get to know other people at the university who share the same interests as you - you can make some great friends!

Club objectives

Have fun, improve riding skills, and to keep fit and relax!
