The University of Essex Metal Society

The University's links to metal stretch all the way back to 1978 when none other then AC/DC graced the stage and if you fast forward to the 2019/20 academic year you can see the spirit is still going strong when two upcoming bands, Dismanibus and Forged In Black, originate from the Uni and play near it frequently.

Add to this the thriving metal scene in Colchester that has included recent tours from the likes of Dimmu Borgir, Paradise Lost, Skindred, Winterfylleth, Napalm Death, Black Stone Cherry, Dragonforce, Huntress and Amon Amarth alongside frequent metal from smaller/local bands at local pubs, and you will have no problem keeping your life suitably HEAVY. See you in the pit!

What We Do:

We attend concerts, both in London and locally, such as at the Colchester Arts Centre and local pubs. Whether the gig is a society-organised event or just something a few members want to attend, the exec team will always strive to make sure your night is as amazing (and cheap!) as possible. If there's a concert you want to attend but don't have anyone to go with, we'll help you find other people from the society that might be going too, as well as helping you find the cheapest rail fares and the easiest way to get to the venue. Just keep us informed about the gigs you want to attend and we will do our best to help.

We hold socials every Thursday in a variety of venues and all are welcome to attend. Due to current times we are looking to move a lot of our events to the virtual space. Ideas such as quizzes, watch parties and opportunities to hear new music and share your own favourites. These events are a great opportunity to get to know other members of the society so come along and join us!

Finally, the society doesn't stop meeting up just because the year ends! Many members attend summer festivals such as Bloodstock (UK), Download (UK), Hellfest (France) and Wacken (Germany). While trips to these festivals aren't officially society based events, with so many members attending each one, it's a great chance to meet with friends and catch up, all the while watching and listening to some best metal bands in the world! We also try and attend one-day festivals during the academic year, so keep your eyes on our Facebook group so you know just who is going where.

Society Aims:

The metal society wants nothing more than to unite people with similar interests in music so that they can bond and make life-long friendships. It doesn't matter what kind of metal you are into, whether metalcore, death metal, gothic metal or even rap metal; if you are into metal or hard rock, then you are welcome in the society and chances are you'll find someone who listens to the same bands as you!
