This is Arthouse Film Society, for anyone who loves film to come along and explore all that cinema has to offer -

We show a range of art house and independent films from all around the world, from Japan to Sweden, from the 1920s to the present day, hoping to share interesting, thought provoking stories of all different genres and presented in a variety of forms: from silent cinema to the latest animation technology, from conventional linear storytelling to experimental and surreal art film, in a laid back and friendly atmosphere.

We are also interested in FILM PRODUCTION, and offer workshops for all of those who are interested and do not otherwise have the chance to, no matter what background or level of expertise. We want to address all aspects, from storytelling to the technical use of equipment and are looking to collaborate in order to produce shorts together, as well as simply offering our equipment for individual use.

Our members have full access to a:

CANON EOS 600D HDSLR Video Camera

Sennheiser MKE400 On-Camera Microphone

Giottos MTL9351B Tripod

Manfrotto MVH500AH Fluid Video Head

WEEKLY SCREENINGS are held on THURSDAYS, 7:30pm after which we usually head down to the pub!

We also host a Radio Show for the society where we discuss old films, invite people to review new films and play memorable soundtracks.  Anyone who wants to join us or contribute in some way is more than welcome! Check back for details.

What we have planned for the year so far:

- CYCLE CINE: A four day bicycle-powered outdoor film festival with live music and food from the 7th to the 10th of October (details TBA, check back for event page)

- Trips to the film theatre in Ipswich or London in case an interesting film comes out which the Colchester Odeon does not offer.

- Mini themed festivals throughout the year in collaboration with other societies and academic departments. Ex: Philosophy and Film festival, with films presented by professors and/or students, followed by open discussion. And a documentary film festival (perhaps showcasing Werner Herzog's early documentaries).

- Socials: barbeques, house parties, visits to Colchester and Wivenhoe. In the second week of term (19th - 24th October) we will be heading down to the Colchester Film Festival, with the possibility of attending the masterclasses which they offer.

Some of the directors we love: Kieslowski, Malick, Wadja, Polanski, Wenders, Lynch, Antonioni,  Kubrick, Rossellini, Ozu, Jarmusch, Cronenberg, Visconti, Fellini, Kurosawa, Imamura, Van Sant,  Herzog, Sion Sono, Dreyer, Haneke, Pontecorvo, Mizoguchi,  Forman, Truffaut,  Godard, Cassavetes, Bunuel, Spike Lee, Tarantino,  Fassbinder, Scorsese, the Coen brothers, Bergman, Nicolas Roeg, Satyajit Ray, Weir, Resnais, Leos Carax and many more!

And please don't hesitate to send us suggestions: we want to know what films you are interested in seeing and sharing, which places or festivals you would like to visit and what skills you want to learn!
