MAKE SH*T HAPPEN

GOT AN IDEA?

Essex SU is run for students, by students. You can shape your time at Essex in many ways, one is by submitting ideas and if students support this idea, working with the SU to make it happen.

HOW DOES IT WORK?
  1. You submit an idea
  2. Talk to the SU about the idea and decide if its feasible.
  3. SU Staff assess the idea and categorise it as:
    • Short: this should require less time and resources and is completely within the SU’s control to fix
    • Medium: requires slightly less time and resources to achieve. The SU will commit to spending a term working on this project
    • Long: requires lots of time. The SU will commit to spending a year working on this project
  4. Your idea is added to the website for discussion by students
  5. Your idea is voted on by students
    • Short: Needs 5% of the affected student body to be in favour. The idea is open for voting for a full term or until it hits quoracy.
    • Medium: Needs 10% of the affected student body to be in favour. The idea is open for voting until the end of term.
    • Long: Needs 20% of student body to be in favour. The idea is open for voting until the last day of term 3.
  6. If your idea reaches the quota and is one of the most popular we can work on delivering it

Make the Eat & Meet Free meal fully vegan - short term

    Current
I propose making the free meal fully vegan. There are a few reasons for this. In terms of sustainability, according to the United Nations IPCC along with many other peer reviewed academic studies, a plant-based transition is proposed as the single biggest change we can make to mitigate for climate change. The meat and dairy industry is responsible for greenhouse gas emissions second only to the fossil fuel industry. Furthermore, we can in this country live perfectly healthy lives on plant-based diets and thus we can contribute to ending the slaughter of sentient beings who are systematically abused and do not want to die. Finally, and perhaps above all for a students' union that prides itself on inclusivity, plant-based meals can be eaten by everyone and thus there is no chance of someone being unable to access the free meal on religious grounds, ethical grounds and food intolerance grounds. Changing the free meal to fully plant-based is absolutely win-win. No one loses out and everyone gains.

2:25pm on 27 Apr 23 Yes! The su should be doing thnigs with lentils, beans ect beacuse these are affordable and filling for everybody. These meals however should be having decent amounts of protein in, rather than just vegetables and carbs which is what I dont like about these meals. They dont really fill me up at all.
