AWARD WINNERS 🏆

2026

SOCIETY OF THE YEAR

Awarded to the society that has demonstrated outstanding performance, impact, and engagement throughout the year.

Islamic 🥇

Islamic Society successfully organised an Islamic Awareness Week, alongside da’wah training in collaboration with ARU ISoc. Their Week of Change was a significant highlight of the year, successfully raising over £3500 for One Ummah through bake sales, barbecues, football events, and a cultural night involving over 7 societies. During Ramadan, they organised subsidised iftars for up to 100 people. Their network has also extended out to external organisations, including Colchester and Essex Mosque, to support a wider off-campus community and make connections with community members.

NEW SOCIETY OF THE YEAR

Recognises a newly established society that has shown exceptional initiative, growth, and potential since its start-up.

Applicable to societies who started in or after Term 2 of the academic year 24-25. Cannot be a re-started society within the last 2 years.

Neurotech 🥇

Neurotech's first event attracted a remarkable 60 attendees, all due to their continued efforts to gain visibility. By networking with similar societies, promoting the society to their peers in classes, and proactively reaching out to professors and external organisations, they left no stone unturned to build a strong foundation for their new group. They’ve been consistently active throughout the year, running regular workshops and exciting one-off events with 50-70 student attendees each time. Members continue to benefit from this society by gaining new skills, network with external groups, and gain hands-on opportunities before graduating.

MOST ACTIVE SOCIETY OF THE YEAR

Awarded to the society that has hosted the most events and activities, promoting vibrant student experiences.

Women in STEM 🥇

From the first week of term, Women in STEM were already in rooms across campus giving Welcome Week talks to new students in SRES, CSEE, Psychology, Life Sciences, and the School of Mathematics. Once the year got going, what they offered was genuinely varied. From career panels and workshops to mentoring schemes, complemented by exciting social opportunities, WiSTEM delivered something for everyone. They also collaborated with VTeam's Science Club and Coding Club for a STEM Outreach Day in a local primary school, using part of the £700 funds awarded through the RS Student Fund grant.

POWERED BY STUDENTS

Given to the society that has displayed remarkable student-led innovation and creativity in its initiatives and projects.

Theatre Arts 🥇

Theatre Arts Society focused on getting to know their members and making everyone feel included. One way in which they did this was through their TAS Tries initiative, where members attend events from different clubs, societies and VTeam projects together. Their members are at the core of decision-making within the society, using feedback forms and voting to decide on the direction of their activities. In response to member feedback, the exec team arranged workshops for members, using their connections at Lakeside Theatre and alumni TAS members.

MOST EMPLOYABILITY FOCUSED OF THE YEAR

Recognises the society that has prioritised professional development and career-building opportunities for its members.

Law 🥇

This year, Law Society hosted a variety of events focused on academics as well as life after university. Through a mixture of Q&A’s, workshops, competitions, presentations, mock assessments, and partner schemes, they targeted different stages and skills regarding employment as well as providing networking opportunities with successful professionals. Post-event feedback showed members grew in confidence and started thinking more about their future careers as a result of these opportunities. One society member won the prestigious Hogan Lovells Prize at the BIUCAC competition after being encouraged to sign up during one of the society’s workshops.

Highlights the most impactful or memorable event hosted by a society, showcasing excellent planning and execution.

MALAYSIAN: MNight 2026: ‘Wau: An Eye for an Eye’ 🥇

MNight plays are a long-standing tradition for Malaysian Society, winning Event of the Year for the second year in a row. Their thorough planning and promotional efforts attracted an audience of 122 individuals and raising £915.70 in ticket sales. Putting on a show from the ground up was meaningful for the society as it allowed members to spend a lot more time together, get to know each other beyond surface level, and build a level of trust and familiarity one needs when being away from home.

COLLAB OF THE YEAR

Awarded to two or more Societies who collectively organised an event that surpassed all expectations through mutual collaboration, task delegation, and smooth delivery

MUSIC & AMNESTY INTERNATIONAL: JAMNESTY 🥇

Amnesty International reached out to Music Society to see if they were down to bring Jamnesty back to Essex. The goal was to deliver a heartfelt night of live music whilst fundraising money for charity. Members of both societies were introduced to a completely new society and bought each other’s memberships. They were also able to meet new people and build friendships after the event. The demand to make this event an annual occurrence is high, and the incoming exec are already planning to host this night.

MOST CHARITABLE SOCIETY

Celebrates the society that has shown significant contribution in fundraising efforts and dedication to making a meaningful difference to a charity.

This award is not one you apply for, but will be decided based on money raised through the RAG account and the winner will be announced at the awards evening.
